When Toronto was awarded it’s first ever NBA All Star game, we knew we had
to bring something different to the table. In partnership with Shelley’s
Catering & Special Events, official NBA All Star Weekend vendor, we threw
the most unique and creative event of the weekend.

Using the basis that the game was created by a Canadian, a welcome home
party was the foundation for the event theme. A fraternity house was the
perfect backdrop to the house party that we all remember attending in our
youth days. 2 floors, 2 DJs, food and a dessert table made it worth braving
the frigid temperatures outside.

What’s a basketball themed party without a slam dunk competition? Toronto
influencers and celebs acted as our slam-dunk judges. Special thanks to
Canadian companies Amsterdam Brewery and Screech Rum sponsors.

Blavity, a media website for Black millennials and culture, threw its
first large-scale event in May 2016. EmpowerHer was created to connect
bloggers, influencers, techies and entrepreneurs from across the continent.
Taking the statistics that Black women are the fast growing group of
entrepreneur and leading the charge in various other fields and industries
– the full day event was about learning, sharing and building.

The day kicked off with a branding keynote from the award-winning blogger
and author Luvvie, touched on the important topics of self-care with
Editor-in-chief of Teen Vogue Elaine Welteroth, influencer and model
Gabifresh and other influencers. From venture capital funding to getting
ones travel on, the hilariously honest fireside chat with activist Netta
and Blavity CEO Morgan Debaun and ending the day with lessons on how to use
the internet to impact change, it was an inspiring day with impact that
will last a lot longer.
